A majority of the ideas for the show originated in an unregistered, educational comic book entitled The Intertidal Zone, which Hillenburg created in 1984. He started developing SpongeBob SquarePants right into a tv sequence in 1996 upon the cancellation of Rocko's Contemporary Existence, and considered Tom Kenny, who had worked with him on this show, to voice the titular persona. SpongeBob was initially to be named SpongeBoy, along with the show was to be called SpongeBoy Ahoy!, as the title was already in use for a cleaner product, however, they were altered.
